Making Tax Digital (MTD)

Making Tax Digital Is Here. Let Taxwise Take Care of It.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live.

For affected sole traders and landlords, MTD changes the way accounting records are maintained and information is reported to HMRC.

Instead of dealing with your bookkeeping only once a year, affected taxpayers need to maintain appropriate digital records, use compatible software and provide quarterly updates to HMRC.

Taxwise Accountants NI provides a complete Making Tax Digital service for sole traders and landlords across Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Our aim is simple: You Run Your Business. We Manage MTD.

When Does Making Tax Digital Apply?

MTD for Income Tax is being introduced in stages.

Qualifying income Reference tax year MTD start date
More than £50,000 2024/25 6 April 2026
More than £30,000 2025/26 6 April 2027
More than £20,000 2026/27 6 April 2028

Are You Already Within MTD?

Qualifying Income Above £50,000?

If your qualifying income for 2024/25 was more than £50,000, you should generally already be using MTD from 6 April 2026.

If you have not yet set everything up correctly, Taxwise NI can help review your position and get your records organised.

Preparing for April 2027?

Qualifying Income Above £30,000?

If your qualifying income for 2025/26 is more than £30,000, you will generally need to start using MTD from 6 April 2027.

We recommend preparing before April rather than waiting until your first quarterly deadline.

Setting up your digital bookkeeping early gives you time to make sure your records, software and accounting process are working properly.

What Does Qualifying Income Mean?

One of the most important MTD points is that the threshold is not simply based on your taxable profit.

The relevant test broadly considers qualifying gross income from self-employment plus property income, before business expenses.

For example:

Self-employed turnover: £36,000
Gross property income: £18,000
Combined qualifying income: £54,000

The combined amount can therefore determine when MTD applies. This is particularly important for individuals who are both sole traders and landlords.

Next MTD Deadline: 7 November 2026

For taxpayers already within MTD and using the standard quarterly periods, the next update is due 7 November 2026.

HMRC’s standard deadlines are:

Update Deadline
First update 7 August
Second update 7 November
Third update 7 February
Fourth update 7 May

The standard quarterly updates are cumulative from the beginning of the tax year to the end of each relevant update period.

MTD Does Not Mean Four Full Tax Returns

Quarterly updates are not four complete Self Assessment tax returns.

The updates are based on the digital income and expense records held in your compatible accounting software. Your accounting records are then finalised as part of the year-end tax-return process.

The purpose of the quarterly system is therefore to maintain and report information more regularly throughout the year.

Missed an MTD Quarterly Deadline?

If you should already be using Making Tax Digital and have fallen behind, it is better to address the problem now rather than leaving it until the end of the tax year.

For 2026/27, HMRC is not applying penalty points for late quarterly updates. However, affected taxpayers must still maintain digital records and send the required quarterly updates before submitting their tax return.

Taxwise NI can help organise your bookkeeping and bring outstanding MTD records up to date.

Making Tax Digital for Sole Traders

MTD affects a wide range of self-employed businesses. We can support:

  • Taxi drivers
  • Contractors
  • Tradespeople
  • Consultants
  • Freelancers
  • Retailers
  • Hospitality businesses
  • Professional service providers
  • Other sole traders

The practical challenge for many businesses will be moving from once-a-year bookkeeping to keeping financial records properly organised throughout the year. Taxwise can manage that process for you.

Making Tax Digital for Landlords

Property income can also bring individuals within MTD.

This becomes particularly important if you receive both self-employment income + property income.

Even where neither income source individually exceeds the relevant threshold, the combined qualifying income may affect your MTD position.

We can help establish appropriate digital records and manage the ongoing reporting process.

Digital Bookkeeping & Xero

Good bookkeeping is at the centre of Making Tax Digital.

Taxwise NI can help move your accounting records into a suitable digital system and establish a process that works throughout the year.

As a Xero Certified Advisor, we can help clients use cloud accounting where appropriate, including:

  • Bank feeds

The objective is not simply to comply with MTD. It is to create an accounting system that is easier to manage and gives you better visibility over your finances.
